APEX, N.C. -

A new state-of-the-art community may be built in Apex starting next year.

The Veridea development will be constructed at the intersection of U.S. 1 and N.C. 55. The 1,000 acre sustainable community will include 10 million square feet of office space, 3.5 million square feet of commercial and retail development along with 8,000 residential units.

Developer Tom Hendrickson said he is confident in the project despite the economy.

"This is a long term project and the planning is important so we're ready when the economy turns around," Hendrickson said.

The Veridea development is just in the planning stages and still must be approved by the Apex town council. Town officials and developers said it could bring more than 30,000 jobs and thousands of new residents to the area. Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly said it will do even more.

"It's six billion dollars worth of tax base for Apex. It's going to be the highest standard of development in the country," Weatherly said.

Town officials and developers announced the venture at a press conference today calling it the "next generation version of R-T-P". Director of Economic Development Jim Stella agrees.

"It will also be a model for future development," Stella said.

They plan begin on the $60 million ground work in 2010, continuing construction over a 15 year period.

"It's going to be the standard of development that our citizens will be proud of," Weatherly said.

Weatherly says before the council makes a decision the public will have a chance to speak out about the project.

A question for all the previous posters. Have any of you seen the plans? If not, blasting away from the sidelines before doing some research is in poor taste. This development has been a few years in the planning and is not done yet. If you think the economy will remain the same as it is today then you may be right and we are all in for big trouble. I do not think things will remain as they are and this plan is for the future. I would rather see this then the generic subdivisions we see today that eat up all of the municipal services and leave us with an unhealthy tax base. Yes trees will come down just as they would if the area was developed piecemeal. At least this place will not look like every other neighborhood. And it should go a long way in keeping out taxes from going through the roof.

Veridea (rhythms with Chlamydia) was defined as Truthfully Green Ideas. Such as clear-cutting 1000 acres, adding millions of gallons of sewage into an already impaired water supply, and letting area residents foot the bill for a $329 million sewer plant forced onto the New Hill community.

Wow, thanks for reporting on a 2yr old story. This is the project that used to be called Trinity with all the same basic ideas.

how do you propose this is going to succeed when you can't even keep the storefronts in the middle of town filled? I have seen so much construction and destruction over the last 4 years in Apex it is rediculous! I moved here because I loved how beautiful and unincorporated the area was. This was pre beaver commons etc. Since that time not only have stores left but you are knocking whole shopping centers down to rebuild etc. This is rediculous and a waste of our money! You already wasted our money building that intersection, changing the way things were gonna be so pulling up cement and blacktop that had been poured to reconfigure things only a few months later on 55 by 1. Why not improve what we have and try and work with what we have before tearing all these trees down? This makes me consider even more moving.
