Hillsborough Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Rosemary Street and Bolinwood Drive at Hillsborough Street will be closed starting on June 15 for a two-week roadway project to improve pedestrian safety. The project responds to a Town Council commitment to making the community a safe and enjoyable place to walk.
The work involves replacement of 12 driveway aprons on the west side of the street to improve pedestrian flow; replacement of 10 curb ramps to improve accessibility; drainage improvements to eliminate standing water; roadway base repairs; milling (a process of machine grinding the existing asphalt); and the installation of a new asphalt riding surface.
The use of the two streets will be restricted to residents, their guests and those doing business within the construction zone; all other motorists will be required to take an alternative route. Hillsborough Street local traffic will be restricted to one-way flow south only from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to Rosemary Street. All northbound traffic will follow the detour.
Chapel Hill Transit will operate on a detour route that will include stops along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Umstead Drive and at Hillsborough Street and on E. Franklin Street at Hillsborough Street and at Raleigh Street. The bus stops on Hillsborough Street will be out of service during the construction. Please visit www.chtransit.org for further information on the transit stops and times during this detour. Information on the transit detour can also be obtained by calling (919) 969-4900.
Motorists and pedestrians are asked to anticipate delays while traveling through this construction zone. At times, various operations will be occurring at multiple locations throughout the construction zone, so please drive slowly, exercise caution and be prepared to stop.
