U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan is delivering the commencement address at a North Carolina magnet school.
The North Carolina Democrat will speak Saturday at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. The school draws high school seniors from around the state and provides specialized curriculum in the areas of math, science and technology.
Hagan said that as a state lawmaker she helped secure a budget provision that allowed graduates of the magnet school to attend University of North Carolina campuses without paying tuition. Gov. Beverly Perdue has proposed to phase out that perk to save the state money amid a budget crisis.
The commencement begins at 10 a.m.
