Apex and Cary residents opposed to plans for the expansion of Highway 64 found that they are not alone.
The Save64.org group held a petition signing in Apex all last week and received 2,100 signatures. They presented that list to the NC Deaprtment of Transportation on Friday. Now, the DOT is holding a public hearing on July 16.
As of Monday, there are 2,700 names on the list and the group, including concern resident Dan Epstein, is not giving up educating their neighbors about the plan.
"On one hand it's frustrating because public record is still closed as of last Friday but on the other hand it's encouraging that NC DOT is willing to reach out and educate the community about what they have in mind," Epstein said.
Anyone interested in signing the petition can go to the self serve station at the Kroger and Gifts and More shop at Highway 64 and Lake Pine Road. The group is also planning on going door to door for signatures in their neighborhood.
