RALEIGH, N.C. -

Dozens of "geeks" are taking over Lenovo's campus in Morrisville for what's called a Geek-A-Thon.

Computer companies Lenovo and the Kramden Institute have partnered up for a free computer giveaway.

Thursday through Saturday, volunteers will work to refurbish donated computers for Fort Bragg families who don't have one.

"I don't think a kid today can succeed in school without a home computer. The beauty of it is we put them in homes only that have no computers already in the home. So we're actually bringing the whole family across the digital divide," said the Kramden Institute's Founder Mark Dibner.

When the Geek-A-Thon's over, the refurbished computers will eventually wind up in the homes of Fort Bragg families who need them most -- provided they submit their applications before the end of business Friday.

"If you check on the list that you need a computer because you have none, and you have children middle school-aged or high school-aged, those are gonna be the ones we look at first," said Lynn Olavarria with Army Community Service.

Fort Bragg expects to have about 500 applications by week's end.

The Moore family has already applied and is one of four families already selected to receive a computer through the giveaway.

For them, having a computer means they no longer have to walk to a nearby recreation center just to wait to use a computer.

"It's gonna mean a lot, because now I have all the time when I come home I have enough time to finish my projects and get them turned in," said eighth grader Blessona Moore.

And with so many soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, having a computer can mean so much more.

"Not just school, but having a computer at home, it really improves the communication that they can have with the soldier that's deployed," said Gerhard Guevarra with Fort Bragg's Child Youth and School Services.

This is the second time Lenovo and the Kramden Institute have partnered with Fort Bragg.

Back in 2006, they gave away 255 computers to military families.

This year, selected military families are expected to receive their computers mid-August.
