Area Flooding Causes Road Closures, Evacuations

The National Weather Service and Doppler weather radar estimates more than three inches of rain have fallen across much of Wake County.

Update 5:11 p.m.:Historic Yates Mill County Park, 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh, has received more than 5.8 inches of rain leading to a two-foot increase in the pond's water level and several safety concerns. The mill yard has been washed out, and access to the mill yard, gristmill, and Mill Pond Trail loop is currently closed. The scheduled corn-grinding for Saturday, June 20 will be rescheduled.
Yates Mill, like all water-powered mills, is heavily impacted by large amounts of rainfall. Historic Yates Mill County Park’s Finley Center and exhibit remain open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to sunset.

Heavy rains have also closed the following locations in Cary:

•  The picnic shelter and Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park, 111 Thurston Drive, will be closed through Friday.
•  MacDonald Woods Park, 1601 Seabrook Avenue, will be closed through Friday.
•  The Boathouse at Bond Park, 801 High House Road, will not be renting boats until the lake has returned to normal levels.  Participants are encouraged to call (919) 469-4100 for an update on boat rentals.

Citizens should also use caution when using Town greenways.

Update 10:22 a.m.: Morrisville Square Creative School Daycare Center evacuated to Cedar Fork Community Center due to flooding.
Update 10:22 a.m.: Crews used boats to evacuate the children's day camp at Sgt. Courtney T. Johnson Community center located at 1801 Procter Road in Raleigh.
Update 10:13 a.m.: Rec center on Fountain Drive in Raleigh has been evacuated because water is coming up to the door.
Update 9:50 a.m.: Rock Quarry at Jones Sausage is now closed due to flooding.
Update 8:27 a.m.: Davis Dr and High House in Cary closed due to flooding.
Update 8:20 a.m.: Police have blocked off Avent Ferry Road near Trailwood Drive for flooding.
Update 8:15 a.m.: Reports of minor flooding in Clayton area. Some flooding at underpass at Hwy 70 in Smithfield.
Update 7:50 a.m.: Flooding near the Raleigh Apartments at Peace St. near St. Mary's. Cars are getting by, but slowly.

The Garner Methodist Church is serving as a temporary shelter where the Red Cross is assisting those who were forced from their homes due to the flash flooding along Rock Quarry Road near Southgate Drive. The City Of Raleigh provided CAT buses to transport about 60 residents from the Dana Drive area to the shelter.

According to the National Weather Service, rain showers will continue to develop and will become widespread and heavy at times.

The amount of rainfall in a short period of time will result in flash flooding, especially along creeks and streams or areas prone to flash flooding.
