JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. -

On June 9th, the Johnston County Board of Education recognized several parents who have exercised courageous leadership in the fight against teen related driving fatalities.

In an effort to eliminate teen driving related fatalities of our students, the Because We Care program was adopted by the Johnston County Schools Board of Education in November 2008. Part of this program requires that parents attend a mandatory meeting before their children may enroll in the Johnston County Schools Driver's Education program. During this meeting, Driver's Education instructors outline the curriculum, law enforcement agents explain the Graduated License program, and parents who have lost children in driving related accidents speak to the dangers associated with teen driving.
These parent speakers not only contribute their time to this cause, but selflessly share their painful message with other parents. The feedback received from these sessions has been that our parent speakers are a critical component to the effectiveness of this program.

Our parent speakers are Christy Baker and Julie Stewart; Yvette Davis; Ruth Epps; Barbara and John Mya; Rickey and Becky Richardson; and Lisa and Ronald Smith. Attending family members were also recognized for their support of these individuals.
