Cary Police have responded to two crashes Wednesday near the site of a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a teenage girl.
The most recent accident occured at Cary Glen Road and Carpenter Fire Station at 12:15 p.m. One person is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The other accident happened at 9:10 a.m. at the intersection of Green Level to Durham Road and Courtland View Lane in Cary; it involved three cars. Traffic officers say it appears that a car turned left into the path of a Town of Cary pickup truck that was heading northbound on Green Level to Durham Road. The initial impact propelled the vehicles into a minivan that was stopped at the crosswalk.
Police say two people have been transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Cary Police are still investigating a hit-and-run accident that happened Monday afternoon on Green Level to Durham Road and Cary Glen Boulevard that killed 16-year-old Kailee Birdsong.
While NBC17 crews were gathering video at the scene Monday another accident occurred on the same road.
Many residents say they are concerned and would like town officials to do something about what they say is a dangerous stretch of road.

Here's another danger for you on GL2D road. I was driving south on GL2D Road about 4:30 p.m. on 7-15-09. Just as I neared the crosswalk stipes, a white 4-door sedan ran through intersection from my right. The driver sped through a stop sign on Green Level Church Road at about 50 mph and onto Morrisville Parkway which becomes a dead end just one block East. Had I not paused a few seconds ealier as I turned South onto GL2D road from Courtland View Lane, the errant drive would have T-boned me right in front of the swim club. Just 4 weeks earlier, the exact same thing happened to me at the same place and I barely avoided a collision by a white car speeding through this same stop sign.

To the person who "fears for my family's life" in using the GL2Durham road must live a pretty stressful life on a typical commute to RTP where one is probably presented with a dozen similar opportunities for disaster. Most of his fears could be relieved by spending another 30 seconds inside the sub-division and making right turns only to get where he needs to go. There are many elderly people who travel all day around Cary making safer right turns only. This tactic allows the elderly to drive safely with diminished capabilities and it allows traffic to keep flowing without a traffic light at every corner. When all else fails, look left then right 3 times, and than look again.

Looks to me to be 3 accidents with 3 entirely different roadway grade scenarios. The best way to solve the problem on the GL-to-Durham road is to block the capability of crossing the median and all four lanes. If people are so concerned about safety, just disable that option and wa-la no more T-bone accidents. That would a good balance between safety and keeping traffic flowing during rush hour. Putting a stop light up is the lazy mind solution. Why don't we lower the speed limit to 10 MPH while we're at it. Two lights so close together on GL-to-Durham is just plain bad design. It would quickly become a bottle neck. GL2Durham is going to become too busy to allow these crossovers. It was poor design by Cary roads to allow it in first place. However, let me predict that all the people howling about safety would howl louder if Cary proposed to eliminate the crossovers. I'm pretty sure they would vote to keep the crossovers to save time.

This post is for jen.I am the grandmother of the beautiful 16yr.old that was killed monday at this intersection. So everyone is hyped up about this road?To that I say"Praise God"!Maybe if a traffic light had been there at that intersection Monday my grandaughter would still be alive.Instead I am getting ready to attend her family visitation in a few hours. So I say to all of you readers that have a heart and compassion, help us get a traffic light at this road.Thank you for any kindness and concern shown to my grandaughter kailee. And as for putting blame on the drivers,I'll gladly do that. But first they have to locate the beige vehicle that struck my daught-in-laws car and then left the scene.

I've seen drivers taking unnecessary risks at this intersection. I'm not saying it is an entirely unsafe road... but let's put some of the blame back on the drivers here. The reality is that everyone is in such a hurry to get places that they speed, creep into the road before its safe, or let cell phones or other passengers distract them. I've sat at this road and watched traffic for an hour before and seen numerous accidents almost occur.. and for all of the above reasons. And now everyone is so hyped up about this road that its become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A terrible tragedy occurred the other day, yes, but it is no excuse for drivers making bad decisions. A stoplight would be great at this intersection but don't expect it to solve all the problems... accidents will still happen and then who will you blame then?

This is the same type of situation that happened in Brier Creek. People had to die and/or be critically injured before a light was installed. Since none of these accidents (at Cary Glen)affects the families of the officials making decisions, they really don't give a damn. All they do is spout the "corporate" line. If their teenage daughter was killed, I bet a light would go up in a hurry.

The warrants studies done by the Town's engineers basically count the number of cars that go through the intersection. However, the problem is not the traffic volume but the design of the road. Cars traveling North on Green Level to Durham go down a little dip and, for several seconds, are completely out of sight to westbound cars on Cary Glen Blvd. I have discussed this with the Town engineers many times but to no avail. In any case, this situation needs to be rectified and a traffic light seems to be the most economical solution.

Let's all pray to God that a school bus coming out onto Cary Glen Blvd carrying our precious children is not next!!!

Does anyone else see the irony in a Town of Cary official vehicle being involved in one of these accidents (as shown in the news story photo)? I first talked with the Town in January 2008 about how dangerous the GL-to-Durham/Cary Glen Blvd. intersection is and was told back then they would redo the 2001 and 2006 traffic studies after the Harris Teeter opened. I haven't seen any information to suggest they have followed through with the new traffic study yet.

Actually, there was another one on the corner of cary glen and morrisville carpenter as well, it happened right after the news crew finished up.

I’m sorry I recently moved to Cary with all these traffic accidents near my home including a fatal one this week. I fear for my family’s life and safety because of at least two dangerous intersections in need of traffic lights on Green Level to Durham Rd. And Cary officials say it may not be warranted, it needs to be studied, it may take years and it’s the state’s problem. How many lives and limbs are worth a traffic signal these days? Let me know who to vote for in the next election and write to at the state level to get this problem fixed NOW!
