N.C. State University recovered deleted emails from former Chancellor James Oblinger's e-mail leading up to the hiring of former first lady Mary Easley.
Many of the documents are duplicates of previous e-mails the university already handed over to the U.S. Attorney detailing conversations about her hiring, and written directions concerning courses Easley could teach.
"I don't think in my opinion there is any new information," Interim Chancellor Jim Woodward told NBC 17 News. "There is nothing new as to who is involved. There are additional documents related to her hiring and the discussions that went on," added Woodward.
Some of those new documents revealed Easley's proposed salary and directions on handling the annoucnement of her hiring.
The university recovered a portion of the deleted e-mails on a tape stored for reasons unrelated to Easley.
"We have done a thorough search to be able to assure the public and our board. We have retained an IT Forensics expert who is currently working on campus to review everything we have done and we'll issue a full report to the media," said the interim chancellor.
In 2005, the university policy was to purge emails after 180 days.
Dr. Oblinger's Attorney Press Millen said the chancellor "is not engaging in any wholesale deletions of e-mails."
The former chancellor testified before a federal grand jury last week.
As for the e-mails, "I certainly didn't see anything that substantially changed Dr. Oblinger's view of the case which is that in every respect the hiring of Mrs. Easley was handled properly," said Millen.
The attorney denied Dr. Oblinger knowingly deleted emails of importance and university attorneys speculate the e-mails were deleted "as part of a routinie mailbox cleanup and were beyond backup time periods."
