Raleigh citizens are invited to join the City of Raleigh Fire Department in celebrating the 60th birthday of Fire Station No. 6. Located at 2601 Fairview Road at the Oberlin Road intersection, Station No. 6 is the Capital City's oldest active fire station.
To celebrate this special event, the Fire Department is hosting an open house and birthday party at Station No. 6 on Saturday, June 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food will be provided, and fire apparatus will be displayed for children of all ages. One of the Fire Department's prized antiques, a 1950 Mack that served as Engine 6 for 25 years, also will be on display. In addition, there will be fire education displays and historical materials.
Fire Station No. 6 opened on June 25, 1949. The firefighters of old Engine Company 6 had been housed in a nearby rented building. Fire Station No. 6, also known as the corner fire station, has also housed a ladder company, a rescue squad, and a battalion chief over the years.
