Officials say North Carolina State linebacker Nate Irving, a leading tackler for the Wolfpack, has been charged with careless and reckless driving after a wreck that left him with a broken leg and a collapsed lung.
The state highway patrol says troopers believe Irving may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The school said Irving was expected to undergo surgery Sunday night.
Irving's mother tells The Charlotte Observer that her son was returning to N.C. State from his home in Wallace, located near Wilmington.
She says Irving is expected to recover from his injuries. But the junior's status for the upcoming season was not immediately known.
N.C. State opens the season at home against South Carolina on Sept. 3.
