RALEIGH, N.C. -

How do you feel about a city of Raleigh law that would ban tethering of animals for extended amounts of time?

If you do not have the time for a dog..don't own one!Dogs need to be walked..and socialised. We have wonderful places for dogs to be exercised.Dog parks, lake trails, parks.Dogs do not need to be tethered 24/7....Tying a dog outside without food or shelter or supervision is just plain ignorant...

I think it is cruel and ignorant to expect a dog to live in a human habitat and sublimate its natural instincts. Tethering does not mean neglect or abuse. After all, you can neglect a dog inside a house, yard, kennel, etc. It is not the form of containment, but how it is done. The form of containment needs to be suited to the needs of the dog and owner. What is good for one, may not be for another. Many dogs are expert fence climbers, and/or can dig under a fence in minutes. A properly tethered dog can enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the out of doors, dig in the dirt, splash in a kiddy pool, and nap in the sun, and just plain be a dog while the owner is busy or at work. For certain breeds, this is ideal. I had a husky that ATE through an exterior wall of the house to escape! A one size solution for dog containment does NOT take into account the needs of a dog, and is an anthropomorphic attempt to treat dogs like furry humans rather than honoring their evolutionary history. There are already laws on the books for dealing with abuse and neglect and sheltering. An ill-thought out law will cause dogs to lose their loving homes, and perhaps their lives if owners have to give them up. This has happened in other communities that have passed such laws. A good tethering system gives a dog plenty of space to move around in freely while being safely contained.

I'm so proud of Raleigh, my hometown! In the county I currently reside in, chaining a dog to a tree 24/7/365 is the norm and no one bats a eye. It's disgusting. But folks around here are uneducated and unconcerned with anything beyond the trailer park. I've learned not to expect much when dealing with such widespread ignorance.

It is very cruel treatment of a thinking and feeling being who will live and give back for a decade or more. If that is your intended way of pet confinement, buy a hamster!!
