Eighty years after his death, the first North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper killed in the line of duty is being honored with a bridge that bears his name.
The Dispatch of Lexington reported that the name of George I.Thompson will now be immortalized on a bridge along U.S. 74 about 40 miles southwest of Charlotte.
Thompson, who was 35 when he died in 1929, was killed when the 14-year-old driver of a truck struck his motorcycle.
