The new section of the Apex Peakway connects the Norris Industrial Park to Highway 55 and runs in front of the new Wal-Mart that is under construction. The road is now open to the public and nearby business owner Jimmy King said it's about time.

"A number of companies here have been waiting anxiously for the Peakway to open because their customers were having trouble finding their businesses," King said.

Large delivery trucks from the Norris Industrial Park had to go through residential areas to get out of the development which King said was becoming a problem.

"So now our equipment can leave our facility and get to U.S 1 without going through neighborhoods," King said.

The Peakway is a four lane highway and Director of Construction Management for Apex Kent Jackson said it will help traffic to flow smoothly in the area when the Wal-Mart opens in October.

"I think with the Peakway and additional lanes on highway 55, I think it will offset the increase in traffic," Jackson said.

King said the overall development will benefit the surrounding businesses in the long run.

"A number of businesses have located into the park look forward to the traffic here because most of them are showroom businesses and rely on the that traffic," King said.

The traffic light at South Hughes and the Apex Peakway has also been activated to further improve traffic flow.
