When temperatures approach triple digits, it can be dangerous for everyone, no matter what kind of physical condition they're in.
Firefighters can be particularly susceptible - they already work in hot conditions, and the turnout gear they wear doesn't exactly breathe.
At an apartment fire off of Raleigh's Sedgewick Drive on Monday, there were almost as many ambulances as there were fire trucks, and they were serving double duty protecting residents and fire fighters themselves.
"In addition to the hazards of the fire, we need to be particularly careful about making sure that we're keeping them cool, keeping a check on their vital signs and making sure they're safe before they go back in and do what they have to do," said EMS District Chief Jeffrey Hammerstein.
No firefighters succumbed to heat exhaustion at that fire, and there were no other injuries related to the blaze itself.
