DURHAM, N.C. -

Officials with Duke Energy said a blown transformer caused a major power outage, Monday evening.

The outage occurred shortly before 5 p.m., officials said.

About 9,000 people were without power in the Hope Valley area of Durham. Officials with Duke Energy said a blown transformer likely caused the power outage.

The affected area was above Interstate 40 near Streets of SouthPoint Mall, but the shopping center was not affected.

Officials in Durham said the outage had impacted traffic lights throughout the area causing some delays for motorists.

By 7 p.m., power had been restored to almost all of the 9,000 Duke Energy customers.
