RALEIGH, N.C. -

School officials are using the latest bus accident where a 6-year-old was killed to remind the public to be cautious around school buses.

On tuesday, traditional school starts with about 900 buses transporting kids around Wake county.

Thursday, police released the 911 tapes that detail exactly what happened after 6-year-old Ashley Ramos-Hernandez was hit by an SUV after getting off her school bus.

"The accident yesterday was a terribly tragic reminder to all of use as drivers to exercise particular caution around school busses," Don Haydon, Chief Facilities and Operations Officer for Wake County Public School System, said.

At Green Elementary School, Ashley's school, grief counselors were there for the students and staff affected by Wednesday's accident.

Principal Shelly Watson remembered the student she once took home because she missed the bus.

"I mean, (she was) always smiles, would come up and give me a hug everyday," Watson said. "It's gonna be difficult."

According to state statistics, each day more than 2300 cars illegally pass a stopped school bus.

Those are busses that have lights activated and a stop arm out.

Police reports say the driver in Wednesday's accident didn't see the flashing lights, but school officials are using the tragedy to remind drivers to pay extra attention to busses whether the lights are on or not.

"Anytime a driver approaches a school bus, basically be cautious," Haydon said.

The driver, 83-year-old Geraldine Dietz, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and passing a stopped school bus.

Her husband described her this morning as too distraught to talk about what happened.
