Buses were kept waiting at some Wake County schools Tuesday afternoon as administrators tried to ensure that no child was left behind on the first day of school.
That left parents waiting at bus stops and tired children boarding buses well past their scheduled departure time from school.
Wake County Public Schools spokesman Michael Evans said principals at some schools were holding buses until all riders were accounted for.
"That's why we ask parents to be flexible and patient for the first couple of weeks," he said. "Once we get the flow worked out, buses should be leaving campuses within seven to 10 minutes of dismissal."
