North Carolina officials say a state mental health hospital in Raleigh could stay open for years to come.
The state has been plotting for a decade to close Dorothea Dix Hospital but plans have been repeatedly delayed because of problems within the mental health system. Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Mark Van Sciver says the agency plans to move about 150 beds from Dix to the new Central Regional Hospital in Butner. That would leave 150 beds still at Dix.
Lawmakers have provided funding for Dix to stay open for another year, and the General Assembly will have to decide whether to continue funding it.
