Incumbents Jones and Schulze, newcomer Lance Olive win straw poll

RALEIGH, NC (August 28, 2009) -- Candidates running in the 2009 elections around the Triangle attended the Triangle Community Coalition's annual political forum Thursday, and each had the opportunity to address an audience concerned with identifying ways to balance economic growth, development, the environment, and their community's needs.

As the night progressed, attendees were asked to vote in a straw poll to select the candidates they felt would best lead the region throughout the next few years.

In Apex, where three seats are up for election this November, voters were asked to select up to three candidates from the field of seven.

Incumbent Councilman Mike Jones led with 64 percent of the votes cast. Incumbent Gene Schulze and first-time council candidate Lance Olive each received 43 percent of the vote.

Olive, a long-time member of the Town's planning board and its current Vice-Chair said he felt his message of maintaining a slow but healthy rate of growth and protecting Apex's small town feel resonated with the crowd.

"I strongly support balanced growth that blends well with our existing character, meets the needs of the future, and stands the test of time," Olive said.

According to the Triangle Community Coalition's website, the group is committed to measures that strike an appropriate balance between community needs, the environment, and the rights and interests of property owners.
