A Triangle spa is shutting its doors in the wake of the recession gripping the nation.
Iaitra Spa and Health Center has decided to close its Raleigh locations effective immediately. It blames the move on the economy.
"Unfortunately as consumers are forced to tighten their budgets, we have taken a hit in sales that we just cannot overcome," Iatria President and CEO David Mangrum wrote in a statement. "We are deeply saddened to discontinue the services that we have enjoyed delivering to this community for the past ten years."
The company had locations on Creedmoor Road and East Davie Street. It's Website was taken down Monday afternoon.
R.O.I. Salon in Raleigh has offered to honor gift certificates from the now-closed Iatria Spa and Health Center, dollar for dollar.
"We're not looking at if the gift certificate says a manicure, or a pedicure, or a facial, they can bring it in and exchange it for any of our services, hair included," said Roi Parker, owner of R.O.I. "We're a hair, nails, and skin care salon."
Generations Salon and Day Spa says it is actively interviewing and trying to employ some of the former Iatria staff members.

I wish the best for Dave. I was at Iatria the Friday before it close and asked Dave about renewing my membership. He did not try and sell me a membership, he said that he did not have any information on it. It is very sad and I am sorry for the employees.
By Jennifer on 09/24 04:24 PM
I have known Dave Mangrum for 22 years. I know that he worked very hard to create a successful business. Without his talents, Iatria would not have sustained the many years it remained in business. Without his financial investments, Iatria would not have been created. He did not, would not and will not ever deliberately do anything dishonest. Whatever has occurred, I know that he used ten years of his life to do his very best to save this business. Sadly near its end, I am sure clients are confused and angry about unfulfilled gift certificates, however, assigning deliberate intent is just not so. This business has cost him his savings, his retirement, his home, his family, his friends, his hobbies, his peace of mind and finally, it has stalled his career for ten years. I hope that he knows that there are many of us who wish him the very best as he goes through this difficult time and that he gets busy searching for his own dreams again.

By synergy spa on 09/04 03:23 PM
This is a follow up to our last comment in our effort to provide a realistic solution to those Iatria gift certificate holders: Update Sept.4 3PM Synergy Spa (www.FeelSynergy.com) in Glenwood Village Shopping Center Raleigh, will be honoring Iatria gift certificates at 100% of the authenticated value in increments of 50% of the value of service booked at Synergy.(i.e. you have $150 gift certificate and book a $100 service then we would apply $50 to this service and the balance of $100 will be available for future Synergy service on same conditions and you will surrender your Iatria GC in place this account setup balance). We understand that some gift cards may not show a value (i.e. magnetically encoded with the value). In these cases Synergy Spa will establish a $50 credit towards services on the same basis as above in exchange for the card. These cards will be accepted starting Sept.14 until Nov.25 for bookings on Monday 12-8PM, Tuesday 9AM-8PM, Wednesday 9AM-8PM; and Thursday 9AM-4PM. For details please call 919-510-5130. Obviously, space will be limited and we will try to accommodate as many discounted services as possible and we will evaluate the duration and terms of this good faith offer at any time. Their will be a black out period of October 12-18 while Synergy Spa participates in the national Spa Week promotion.

Le Paris Spa and its team are very saddened to hear about the closing of Iatria Spas. The economy is touching everybody. We are located in RTP at 5607 NC Highway 55. To the employees of Iatria, we have couple chairs available for hairdressers to rent, and one room available for an estetician to rent. Good luck to the employees who are left with no work. I used to work for Iatria Day spa doing manicures and pedicures at the Creedmoor Road location from 2002-2005. I truly feel awful for the displaced therapists working for Erika Mangrum. I hope everyone will find employment soon. If there are clients who are looking for a nail tech, please call me at 919-740-8526 and ask for Gena.
By Julie White on 09/03 04:52 PM
I just wanted to offer my site/e-mail as a way for clients to get in touch with their therapists. I worked at Wakefield for 4 years and a lot of my clients are finding me from these postings. I do see Katy of Facebook and I can give your info. to her, I wouldn't feel comfortable giving hers out on a forum. I do know people at Creedmoor, not so many at Cary. If you are searching for your therapist and can't find them feel free to send me an e-mail and I can pass on your info. to them. You can also try Facebook, there are a lot of us sharing info on Facebook. I know they would all love to hear from their clients! Julie Feel free to e-mail me if you're looking for your Iatria therapist. www.juliewhitemassage.com

I think this whole situation is sad. I feel bad for the owners, the employees and the clients. I'm sure that no one wants to be in this situation. To "Unknown", thanks for giving us the inside scoop. It's sad to hear that employees were treated that way. I don't know the owners but I have been to Iatria many times over the years and always had good services. I am not sure about the North Carolina labor laws, but in Connecticut, Employers are REQUIRED to pay EMPLOYEES before any creditors, i.e. Utilities, rent, etc. All Iatria employees should get all back pay before anyone else. Check into this as soon as you can so you get the ball rolling. Don't give up. You have a right to back pay. I do know that many "beauty" businesses are suffering since many people have had to give up "extras". Unfortunately those extra are help when a person is under stress so it hurts everyone. To other spa owners, I would recommend that you keep your staff happy and if necessary, lower your prices on services but NOT lower your employee’s salaries. This will keep people coming back to your spa and they will see happy people working there. In the end, this is good for your business b/c it shows you care about more than just making lots of money. People will keep coming back & when the economy gets better, raise your prices slowly but let people know. Maybe have an "Economy Sale"! You will still be making money, just not as much but you will stay in business. I still see my hairstylist every month and get manicures b/c I need to feel good about how I look. The hairstylist and manicurist need to stay in business. It's a win-win. Good luck to everyone. Iatria had some wonderful people working there. Hope they somehow keep in touch with their clients.
By Mike on 09/03 08:21 AM
I tried using my Iatria gift certificate at R.O.I., but it looks like R.O.I was just blowing smoke to get some free exposure. If you are making an appointment there, don't mention you have a gift certificate fron Iatria. They wll ask before even concidering to give you an appointment.
By Mary on 09/02 09:55 PM
I am very shocked at the closing! I LOVED Iatria!! I have been an Iatria cusotmer for 9 years. Luckly, my membership was up this past month and I used my last appointment on Friday. On Friday, I did ask Dave about renewing and he did not try to sell me another year. Very sad!
By Unknown on 09/02 08:22 PM
I was one of Iatria's employees, and I woulld like to let all the clients out there know that we will miss you terribly and hopefully we will all get settled somewhere in the next month so that we can take care of you all again. I would also like to mention that the recession was just the nail in coffin. I don't know for sure, but it seemed to me that it was way before that when the problems started. First they changed the way they paid us almost two years ago and then they cut our pay in Jan. And then to top it off they didn't give us any warning and they have let us know that we will be getting maybe 1/2 of our pay for the last two weeks, if anything is left. I am not holding my breath. I am sorry for all the clients who lost money in this. On the Friday and Saturday before they closed they were selling packages to people. It's disgusting if you ask me. Do not think that all spas are suffering so much that they would do that to you. There are good people out there and great spas. To other owners out there, when you start with quality and then become greedy and concentrate on quanity you can kiss your business good bye. Stick with quality and rememeber to compliment your therapists. Thanks for listening/reading. :)

The owners of Synergy Spa are devastated by the closing of Iatria Spa’s. We can not imagine what it would feel like to have to walk away from our business, our amazing team and the clients who support us. We worry that the closing of this spa sends out the message that our industry is suffering due to the economy. Of course we are all feeling the effects of the economy, however there are several spas as well as many businesses that are holding their own. Our real concern is for the employees who are now faced with having to find a job in a market that has very few options. Additionally, we are also concerned that consumers will hesitate to buy gift certificates or frequent spas. If you are a former employee with a solid work history, please email us your resume at info@feelsynergy.com. If we don’t have a position available for you, we have numerous contacts within the industry and will try to help you locate a new position. If you are a client left holding an Iatria Gift Certificate, we will work with you to redeem these with us; we only ask you give us some time so that we can figure out a way to best accommodate everyone. For more information on redeeming your gift certificates with Synergy Spa please check our website at www.feelsynergy.com in the coming weeks for details. Best- Anna Porrazzo and Dave Churchill.

We own Generations Salon and Day Spa and we just heard of the closing. We are deeply saddened as we know how much hard work, energy, and personal sacrifice goes into a business, and after 10 years of service, that has to be heart breaking. We are actively interviewing and trying to employ as many staff members as we can financially support as we know first hand how this impacts their home life, especially those that have children. Our prayers go out to them all.

I have a $600 gift certificate with Iatria and I'm royally pissed as this entire scenario. I want my hard earned money back!
By Dolly on 09/01 02:41 PM
Wow... It is tough all over. Many that I know personally, are also shutting down. I myself have seen the slowing in my IslandMassageRN practice as well, but have lowered my rates damaticly to help others continue thier quest for optimal health and relaxation. I am at Xk fitness and that keeps me afloat as a RN & Massage therapist /Bodyworker as well as doing drop-in in cary and raleigh. Visit with me at SeniorCareRN for my services. Ignore the old prices and see if there is something that I can assist you with, blessings

I just got word that ROI Salon will be honoring Iatria Gift Certificates. I plan to interview the owner this afternoon-- More details to come! And FYI, here are some basic tips from the Attorney General's Office about what you can do when a business closes and you have a gift certificate: If you buy a gift certificate with a credit card and the company closes before the certificate can be used, you may be able to contest the charge through your credit card company. If the business declares bankruptcy, consumers who have unused gift certificates can file a claim with the bankruptcy court. Consumers who wish to file a complaint with our Consumer Protection Division can do so by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM toll-free within NC or 919-716-6000 or by filling out a complaint form online at www.ncdoj.gov.

I loved going to Iatria -after all of these years of being a customer where am I going to go now? Iatria Creedmoor has been the perfect location for me. This past Sunday, I had a facial appointment w/ Catherine. She is great! Although, I noticed a lack of retail inventory, not for an instance did I pick-up on Iatria's Monday closing. I hope the former Iatria estheticians and massage therapists can get on line or pool resources to let customers know how to find them and some how continue services. Catherine if you're out there reading this -I know that you're going to be OK. Any spa hiring you would automatically deserve an additional star. Perhaps, Iatria's owners can somehow assist with connecting former staff with former clients.

I'm in the same boat as other - $100 gift certificate to the spa. What can be done for all of us that have gift certificates or memberships?
By Casey on 09/01 12:27 PM
I love Katy too! I need to know where she is going to work next. I was also a frequent customer and purchased the year-long monthly membership. I am out about $250 now. i am just sad all around about this closure.

Oh no! If anyone knows where Katy might go, please post here! She does the best lash tints. This is a sad day.

I have the same issue as Jennifer. I got a gift certificate for $200 for Iatria but have only used a portion of it. There is still money left on gift card? Anything I can do to recoup the remainder? Thank you!
By Jennifer on 08/31 09:20 PM
I just received a gift certificate from them and had not yet used it! Is there anything we can do?
