Kerr Drugs is opening its doors five days a week for flu shots for the public.
The drugstore saw about 100 people at their Chapel Hill location Thursday. On an average day, 40 to 60 people show up for the shot.
Experts from the state said everyone should get the seasonal flu vaccine, including children. They also say people should also get the shot as soon as possible.
Pharmacists Joe Heidrick said Kerr charges $30 for a shot, but assures the public that the vaccine lasts a year. Those with Medicaid and BlueCross BlueShield insurance can also get the shots at Kerr Drugs.
"There's something called "herd immunity" which protects people who don't get the flu shot. So the more people who get the vaccine, the less chance there is of a pandemic," Heidrick said.
Ruth Ann Groh was in line at the drug store Thursday and says getting vaccinated is important.
"I think it's important to get a flu shot for myself and the more people who get them the probability it will be that we are exposed the flu," Groh said.
The H1N1flu vaccine will come out in October. Experts said children ages six months to 24 years old, pregnant women and healthcare workers are at the top of the list to receive the vaccine. But they encourage everyone to consider being vaccinated.
