Spring Lake, N.C.

Residents say the Town of Spring Lake has seen its share of legal troubles since May after two supervising officers in the police department were arrested on an array of charges.

The chief of police resigned shortly after, along with the town manager.

Now, the town is looking to fill the town manager position, and it held a public forum on Wednesday to ask residents what they want to see in the next manager.

"You have to have public input in a town manager -- not just post a job and look at their application," town resident James Christian said.

Bill Wellons says the new town manager must show dedication, think outside the box and always have the town's best interest in mind.

"They have to have enough guts to stand up to the town board when they think the board is not making the right decisions," Wellons said.

Ted Allen says the person should always have the best interest of the town in mind.

"If you get a person who has real love for his job that he brings back to the community of Spring Lake, you might have something," Allen said.

Currently, the town has received about 30 resumes for the position.

The town is also working to hire a new police chief. They held a public hearing about that position last month.
