U.S. authorities have arrested a State Department employee suspected of taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks on contracts for Iraq's reconstruction.
Court records allege that 52-year-old Richard Lopez Razo began soliciting bribes in 2005 when he was working for an American company with numerous contracts in Iraq.
Razo was hired by the State Department in April 2008 to help manage rebuilding projects in southern Iraq and, according to the court filings, "continued his scheme to obtain bribes."
Razo was arrested Friday and released on personal recognizance.
A woman who answered a Fayetteville, N.C., phone number for Razo said he was traveling.
His attorney declined comment.
