A suspect is behind bars, accused of shooting a man in Garner Wednesday morning.

Muhammad Aleem, 20, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.

Sgt. Chris Clayton with the Garner PD says around 10:15 Wednesday morning, 28-year-old Cameron Vernon Albright was in his grey truck at the intersection of Yeargan and U.S. 70 when he was approached by Aleem asking for a lighter.

Police say there was some kind of interaction and Aleem then shot the victim. The victim drove himself across the street to the Fidelity Bank where he asked for help.

Aleem fled the scene and was caught on foot in the 100 block of Vandora Springs Road. He was booked into the Wake County Jail.

Alrbight was taken to WakeMed Raleigh with non-life threatening injuries. Terry Holder, VP of the Fidelity Bank location, said the emergency response was very quick.

"Our prayers go out to the family, wish him [Albright] well," Holder said.

Ed Chappell said he saw the suspect go by his auto parts store on Yeargen Road after the shooting.

"I saw him running back by the front door, he jerked his jacket off, right straight in front of our front door, threw it on the ground and kicked it over into the weeds and I thought that was kind of odd," Chappell said.

Chappell said he thought the man had been shoplifting in the area, so one of his employees called police.

Police said they believe Aleem acted alone but the motive for the shooting still isn't clear.
