Hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the state fair. But few see it like Horace Johnson.
He camps out on the fairgrounds during the entire fair - ten days a year.
"That allows us to get here earlier in the morning and stay here later at night," Johnson said.
Johnson has worked the fair for more than twenty years. He runs the booth for the Apex Lions Club.
It has become a community of sorts.
"There are people that we see once a year. They come to the fair. They come to eat with us. And we're friends during the fair and then we wonder next year: are they going to be alive and well so we can see them again?"
The booth is the number one fundraiser for the Apex Lions Club. They help people with impaired vision, Apex High School, and Western Wake Crisis Ministry.
This year, they've sold more than 7,000 biscuits.
"It's the best biscuit at the fair," said Melissa Jones, who ate at the booth Sunday, the last day of the fair.
"It's been a very good year, considering the weather we had earlier," Johnson said. "It was cold and rainy and then we had some great days."
Organizers say more than 773,000 people have walked through gates during the past ten days. And four daily attendance records were broken this year.
The overall attendance record was set in 2007 with about 850,000 people. Organizers won't know whether this year set another record until Monday.
After his shift, Johnson enjoys the rides with his grandchildren.
"There's just something about the fair that brings out the kid in everyone," he said.
Now it's almost time to go home.
"Yeah, we're tired. But we're making money to give away to charity. So you don't get tired helping others," he said.
