WAKE COUNTY, N.C.

Local orthodontist challenges trick-or-treaters to benefit themselves and their country

WAKE FOREST, NC -- October 29, 2009—Want to make some money this Halloween? Gladwell Orthodontics is holding its first ever Halloween Candy Buy-Back event to help parents encourage their children to eat and consume fewer sugary treats. Dr. Jason Gladwell, a local orthodontist, will pay each child a dollar for every pound of candy brought into his office at the Heritage Health Park located at 2824 Rogers Road in Wake Forest. The event will be held on Nov. 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and again on Nov. 4 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"Dental decay is a common childhood disease," said Dr. Jason Gladwell. "Even in baby teeth, oral infections can lead to further health problems if they go untreated. Kids can still enjoy the fun of Halloween as long as it's done in moderation. Our goal is to promote a safe and healthy Halloween while also encouraging proper eating habits at an early age."

As an added bonus, all of candy collected will be donated to our service men and women overseas to thank them for their dedication to our country and give them a little reminder of home.

Dr. Gladwell recommends that children who wear braces avoid eating chewy candy such as caramels, licorice, taffy, jelly beans and bubblegum. These types of sticky candy can harm their braces and may lengthen their orthodontic treatment. He also advises patients to steer away from popcorn and hard pretzels.
