The North Carolina Museum of History is presenting an exhibit of decades-old photographs that aren't so far removed from events of today.

Thursday is the 80th anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash, and the museum is marking the date by opening an exhibit of 50 photographs documenting daily life in rural North Carolina during the Great Depression.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent photographers across the country to document conditions among the rural poor and the impact of government relief efforts.

The exhibit, titled "In Search of a New Deal: Images of North Carolina, 1935-1941," runs through Jan. 31, 2011.

The museum also is holding a food drive through Nov. 8 to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
