Raleigh Police charged an 82-year-old woman Monday with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after she ran over a Wake Forest man in a parking lot.
A police report shows that Nancy McCall Bashford was travelling in the Ridgewood Shopping Center parking lot off Wade Avenue when she bumped the rear tire of a motorcycle while it passed over a speed bump.
The driver of the motorcycle, 41-year-old William Thomas McKay, lost control of his vehicle and fell off.
After the incident, Bashford continued on, running over McKay and a traffic median before finally coming to rest in a parking space.
McKay was transported to WakeMed where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Raleigh Police charged Bashford with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

I'm with 'a best friend'--Mrs. Bashford's friends and family were neglectful to let her drive. Nobody seems to acknowledge that they have a responsibility to their elderly relatives and friends. When my grandmother got to the point where she should no longer be driving, my mother and aunt took it upon themselves to talk to her about it. It was not easy or pleasant to take that role, but they did it because it was the right thing to do. Stop shirking your responsibility and talk to your elderly relatives and friends truthfully about their driving. God bless you, Bill. I was always happy to see your smiling face at work.

Everyone of these grieving souls need to be Prayed for. Judgement is not going to bring Bill back. I was gone for the weekend, just read about this. I live within .5 mile to the store and shop @ WF just about everyday. I am shocked. I did not know Bill by name, but do know he Always had a smile on his face and very helpful! God Bless his family with awesome memories of him. May God also bring peace to Ms Bashford at some point. Rest in Peace Bill.

as a decades long friend of Bill's i cannot believe for a moment that this driver was extremely negligent along with her family. i started feeling very sorry for her, but now i feel different. it is beyond words how terribly neglectful this woman and her family and friends are. you can not tell me she was a competent driver in any way. Is it really possible that it was not apparent to her family that she was a danger to society? People are getting struck down every day by old people who refuse to stop driving even though they have lost the skills to do so. i know she didnt intentionally want to kill but she didnt mind risking it for a little more freedom and restriction. Why is it ok for old people to live in denial of deminished driving skills? Cant you find other ways to deny you're getting to old to do *****? How about trying to ride a bicycle or run down the stairs to the basement? How about you try swimming the English Channel and stop being the selfish, ignorant and shallow ***** you have become. You took my friends life because of a need for a little freedom and self-reliance. There were many who called Bill a best friend and i was one of them.

Billy was my dear friend, one of the kindest most gentle souls on the planet. This 82 year old woman had no business behind the wheel of her BMW, I do hope she thinks about this every single day for the rest of her life. I hope she ends up in jail! I hope the Billy's family get justice! Senseless, unthinkable that she would run him over after she knocked him off his bike. I have no sympathy for this woman. she should be more than ashamed, she should pay heavily for what she has done. Take her license away and put her behind bars, she murdered my friend.

Compassion for a sweet old lady ? hmph you have no clue. This sweet old lady has not made any attempt to show her regret. Where were her children or any other family. We know someone with her name lives next to her at 6320 Johnsdale road. This is pure and simple negligence. To run completely over a human body? Was she really the most capable driver in her car? Her son went to the gas station there and told someone she should not have been driving. In my Family when my Grandmother could no longer drive we took her keys. We made arrangements for her to get where she needed to go. She had no business that was more important than my friends life. She deserves way more punishment than what she will get and her family should be ashamed of themselves for not even sending regards for the loss of Bill Mckay. PATTY I will not soften my heart for this woman because this WAS avoidable!!! What is the Ground Clearnce on that car For her to not know My friend was under it she would need more than 20 inches at least if he was flat on the ground. While I do not find it hard to believe she is a sweet old lady Anyone in her vicinity should have thought maybe she can't drive (I was told she uses a walker) and if they had that thought then they are also negligent. The rain that we are experiencing right now is nothing compared to the tears flowing for the Loss of Bill McKay.

As Billy's father I am gratful for your comments ccncerning my deceased son. I grieve, but I am no stranger to death, having landed on Utah beach on D-day, after my troopship was sunk during the invasion of Normandy.Death lurked everwhere then. Come this Friday,my wife and daughters will say our final Fairwell to my only son. Please remember him in your prayers.Thank you!

If Mrs. Bashford could think that Bill turned right, then that shows she shouldn't be driving any more. She hit his rear tire. If she didn't feel that contact, then she should have seen that he'd fallen off his bike and not turned. Her lack of awareness makes her a dangerous driver, period. I am sorry for everyone in this. Of course Mrs. Bashford was horrified. This is going to be awful for her to live with. I hope that she has family that will talk her into giving up her license and vehicle if she hasn't already done it herself. It's the right thing to do.

This is a terrible parking lot! The owners of this shopping center should evaluate how to make it safer. I was in Whole Foods one night when someone left the brake off their car. Their car rolled down the parking lot and into the back of my parked car. The driver was extremely apologetic and the damage minimal. Accidents happen. Insurance paid to get the car repaired. Thanks goodness no one was hurt. I came into the parking lot after this tragedy occurred. It is terrible for all parties involved. The best thing to do is pray for all these families.

I left Bruegger's immediately after the accident occurred. Mrs. Bashford and her friends were in shock, stunned by the events that unfolded. Mrs. Bashford continually asked me about the condition of the biker and was shaking uncontrollably. As she was driving over the speed bump, she lost site of the biker, thinking he turned right, so she continued straight not realizing she hit anything at all. Mr. McKay was taken to Wake Med for the excellent trauma unit and care given there. I was with Mrs. Bashford and her friends until her family arrived. She never left the scene. Accidents happen every day. Nothing was intentional or could have been avoided. Soften your heart for all these grieving human beings who need compassion, not judgment.

I have known the Bashford family for years and I can tell you that Mrs. Bashford has always been a kind a gentle person who would never intentionally hurt anyone. This is a heartbreaking situation for both families.

While I understand that older people are often left to fend for themselves, they still should not be operating motor vehicles once their ability to drive is impaired. Once you are 65 you should have to take a yearly driving test to make sure you are still capable to operate such a dangerous peice of equipment. While I do feel empathy for her and her family, I feel much worse for Bill's family, fiancee, and friends. The parking lot in this shopping center is unsafe no matter what your driving ability. The speed bumps are inadequate and there are too many blindspots. Perhaps this will force the landlord to do something about that. Beyond that, the drivers who use the parking lot are ruthless and unconcerned for anyone else's safety. My car has been hit 7 times (while no one was in the car) so far in five years of working here. Two other employees have been hit on bicycles. My advice to everyone is to look out for others, because they will surely not look out for you.

I can only hope that someday you live long enough to be a"senile old person" yourself. May God have mercy on you in your ignorance and lack of compassion for the victim and the driver. Older people are often left to fend for themselves in today's society. What would you suggest Ronnie? Euthanisia after an age your ilk choses? Accidents are called by that word because that is what they are "accidents"

probably for the same reason we let idiots like you make comments on website.

She did not leave the scene. She was there all day. I work in the shopping center and was able to see the scence from my job all day. Yes, she maybe should not have been driving but get your facts striaght before you start talking like that. Thank you.

This ***** should be locked up for murder and leaving a accident. Why do we keep allowing these old senile people on the roads?
