Resources for Seniors of Wake County is planning to weatherize more than 1,000 homes this winter.
The group provides free weatherization for seniors and low to moderate incomes families. Garman Troup with the Resources for Seniors said weatherizing a home could save those families about $413 a year on energy bills.
Troup said the two main components to weatherization are insulation and air sealing the home.
The group began their weatherizing program Tuesday with a demonstration at a citizen's home in Raleigh.
They showed members of the community how to check for carbon monoxide in their homes, seal windows and doors and also how to install low flow faucets.
The program is funded by stimulus money.
"What that enables us to do is insulate and air seal and provide energy saving measures to not only save seniors and low income family money but at the same time save the rest of us green gases and fuel not being used,"
Once a home is weatherized, it also saves money in the hot summer months by keeping in cool air.
