Police are now saying that a shooting near N.C. State that injured two people Monday morning was gang related.
North Carolina State University Police charged three people with attempted murder in connection with a shooting on campus early Monday morning.
Ryan Alexander Barnes, 20, Leroy Barnes Jr., 19, and Terrell Maurice Grimes, 16 each face a count of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Ryan Barnes is a sophomore at NC State, the other two suspects are unaffiliated with the university.
Police say a young man and woman were shot near the gazebo outside the Wolf Village Apartments.
The suspects then fled, but information from witnesses led police to bring in two people for questioning Monday morning.
Capt. Jon Barnwell with Campus Police said those two people were eventually arrested and charged late Monday, along with the third person.
"From time to time we have a criminal element that rolls onto our campus," he said. "This seems to be that case. However, it's not random in nature. We don't feel there's any ongoing threat to our campus community at this time."
Barnwell says it's possible the shooting is gang-related, and police have not released the names of those involved because of possible retaliation.
The male victim, who was shot in the abdomen, remains in the hospital but is expected to recover.
The female victim, who suffered a gunshot to the foot, was released from the hospital.
Students were alerted about the shooting in an e-mail not long after it happened around 12 a.m. Monday.
Some students taking summer classes say they heard the shots in the early-morning hours.
"It just sounded like boom boom boom, and we called campus police. We needed to know what happened, because I was scared," said student Megan Joseph.
The university also has a siren and text message alert system, but police did not feel there was any threat to the campus after the shooting.
"We knew we needed to get information out in a timely fashion," Barnwell said. "We did not feel it reached the level where we would send it out with text messages or siren."
Sophomore Johnie Cox lives at Wolf Village and went outside after the shooting to see what was happening.
Cox says he checked his student e-mail and read the alert from the university.
"I came out and saw some of the things but the e-mail cleared up a lot of things and gave a lot of official authority explanation of what happened," he said.
During the course of the investigation, police also arrested NC State sophomore Whitney Shanice Blakeney, 19, and charged her with maintaining a dwelling for manufacture, sale and distribution of a controlled substance (marijuana).
Below is the e-mail that University Police sent out at 12:02 a.m. Monday to warn students of the incident.
Two individuals have been detained for questioning following a shooting shortly after midnight Monday morning, July 28, 2008.
Two victims were shot near Wolf Village at the edge of the campus near Western Boulevard. The victims were transported to Wake Med.
Neither the subjects detained nor the victims are affiliated with the University.
Anyone who may have information about this incident should contact Campus Police at 515-3000.
Members of the campus community should be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious persons or activities to Campus Police immediately.
