* Did you know that female chickens under one year of age are called “Pullets” and male chickens under one year of age are called “Cockerels”?
* Did you know that chickens can have either 4 or 5 toes on their feet? It just depends on their breed.
If you would like to learn more about backyard chickens, and their value to the citizens of Wake Forest, please be sure to visit the Wake Forest Farmer’s Market this Saturday, August 9th! We will be there again with a movable coop called a ‘Chicken Ark’, made by CatawbaCoops, and a few feathered friends. You will be able to see for yourself that hens, when properly kept in a well-maintained stationary coop or in a ‘Chicken Ark’, aren't loud, obnoxious, or smelly! You will notice that they're gentle animals, which make great pets and also produce one of our most important foods, the protein packed egg. We will have an informational table set up, and be there to answer questions to help dispel any concerns you may have about backyard chickens.
Please come by to sign our petition too! If you can't make it on Saturday, please visit the link from our blog to the online petition. We feel it's important for Wake Forest to join the progressive cities and towns which recognize the need for a sustainable urban landscape which includes localized food production! Please visit our blog: Backyard Chickens for Wake Forest, at www.wfchickens.blogspot.com, and come see us at the Wake Forest Farmer's Market in downtown Wake Forest on Saturday morning!
The Wake Forest Farmer’s Market is a wonderful way for citizens who can’t do their own growing to obtain a wide variety of locally-grown food that is more healthy and less costly to the environment. Check out what is available at their site: www.wakeforestmarket.org .
