RALEIGH, N.C. -

People who live in George's Mews Apartments in Raleigh's Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood worry an affordable housing project will force them out of their homes.

Wake County's Housing and Community Revitalization Committee voted on Thursday unanimously in support of a $560,500 funding request from Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes, or CASA.

CASA wants to convert the 26 units at George's Mews to housing for people with disabilities or those on annual incomes under $31,000.

"We're talking about 40 to 60 percent of the median family income, which is about 20 to 30 thousand dollars per year," said Dianne Dunning, chair of Wake County's Housing and Community Revitalization Committee. "Those are our teachers, our police officers -- the people within our community that are working very hard to make our communities better."

Sept. 15, Wake County commissioners will decide whether to give the funding final approval. It's the last funding request CASA needs fulfilled to move forward with its project. The City of Raleigh has already pledged over $900,000.

George's Mews tenants are under the impression that they will have to move out as their leases come up.

"Everyone's up in arms," said tenant Ken Phillips. "Where are we going to go? Where can we be?"

Rent at Georges Mews is about $550 a month, and some tenants say they're unlikely to find housing in the same neighborhood for a comparable price.

"Price ranges around here are not appropriate for people with middle income. It's just too much, at least for single people," Phillips said.
