Tropical storm Hanna’s quick passage left good weather behind -- weather that was perfect for Saturday’s Raleigh Wide Open festivities downtown.
As bands played on a stage set up on Fayetteville Street near the new convention center, folks were dancing, clapping and strolling under sunny skies.
“I didn't think we were going to come out today because this morning at 7:30 it was flooding over at my home in Smithfield,” said vendor Tiffany Moody. “I'm glad it's cleared up.”
Also glad were the pint-sized ice cream lickers, turkey leg chompers and the funnel cake eaters, because food's a big part of the fun.
As the crowds strolled, the cool sounds of Freddy Green's musical selections echoed off the walls of the new buildings which now line the downtown as he played his oboe on the sidewalk.
“They spent a lot of money down here, and the convention center is beautiful,” said Greg Kempf who came downtown with his family. “Things are looking up for downtown. I think it’s great.”
